The fall season is here and with that comes changing weather patterns and lawn care upkeep including fall fertilization. Why fertilize your lawn in the fall? As the weather turns cooler, your grass has time to recover from the hot summer heat and slows down plant growth. Taking the time to do a fall fertilization will strengthen your plants’ and lawn’s roots, giving them a strong base on which to thrive next spring.

Not only is fall fertilizer the most important feeding for the cold season, but it’s also essential for a great spring lawn as well.

Late-fall fertilization will also provide:

• Better winter colour
• Earlier spring green-up
• Increased rooting
• Replenished soil in depleted garden beds

When to fertilize

Keep your lawn looking lush before the long winter arrives by adding fertilizer in late fall. For the majority of cool-season lawn owners, apply fertilizer anywhere from September through early November. One key indication of when to apply fertilizer is when your grass has stopped growing or has slowed down to the point of not needing to be mowed. If fertilizer is used too early while your grass is still vigorously growing, it can invite snow mold or winter injury the next Spring. However, don’t wait too long. Avoid applying fertilizer over snow or ice.

On the flip side, it is best to fertilize a lawn right before rain. Light to medium rainfall helps water in the fertilizer, allowing it to sink into the soil. Just make sure the forecast doesn’t call for a heavy downpour, as that can wash away your fertilizer.
